It’s time for longer days and shorter nights; for lazy afternoons, tanning by the pool and evening barbeques. It’s nice because even the evenings still have a bit of sunlight. Spending more time with the kids and watching fireworks on the 4th of July is just a few things to look forward to. For the most part, this is a time to kick back and enjoy various leisure activities.
Due to the relaxed nature of summer, we are inspired to throw more parties, spend more time outside and of course return to the projects that we’ve put off all year. With the weather being more accommodating, summer is the perfect time to finally make those home renovations we’ve always wanted. A bonus of this time of year is that not only do schedules slow down, but labour costs are typically reduced, and contractors have more daylight hours to work with.
The following are seven popular renovation projects ranked by level of difficulty:
1. Small DIY Projects
Now that we have time to spare, it’s best to return to projects we’ve started or kept saying we will start soon. This can include staining the deck, installing new porch railing or even some work inside the house like renovating the closets for more space. Creating a study area for the kids is also an option. Plus, since the kids are home for the summer, they can lend a little help with this endeavour.
2. Painting the House
Summer is the best possible time to paint inside or outside the house. If you are painting outside, you are not likely to encounter any issues with the weather. If you are painting inside, you can comfortably achieve ventilation and drying by leaving the windows open. Small tasks can be done individually or with the help of a few more family members. Larger projects, however, will require a contractor. Curtain Call Custom Interiors says that a fresh coat of paint in summer can be the best cheap renovation to happen to a house.
3. Paving the Driveway
Most contractors are willing to work in the heat of the summer since the asphalt is so much easier to work with. Since asphalt will harden at a slower pace, it will produce a flatter, smoother surface. With a good contractor, your driveway can be paved within a day and should be ready to use a few days after!
Summer is the ideal time for landscaping since plants and shrubs need those warm months to acclimate. You should be able to move flowers around before finding a permanent place for them. Since digging is easier due to the warmth, it might also be a very good time to install sprinklers, lighting or even garden ponds.
5. In-Ground Pool Installation
Since digging through dirt is easier in the warm months, this job is best done in the summer. You will need to dig through a large part of your yard but should have no problems finding a willing contractor. Since this is a faster process in the summer, it should be completed with enough time to enjoy your pool by the hottest days of the season.
6. Kitchen Upgrades
Be prepared to be temporarily kicked out of your kitchen, as your contractor will need the entire space. In a separate room, set up a temporary dining area with a small refrigerator! Don’t forget disposable silverware and plates. Another option is enjoying some summer evenings with some barbeque and dining al fresco!
7. Adding a Home Addition
Take into consideration that any major home addition will require serious commitment and a possible sacrifice of comfort. Home additions can take anywhere from weeks to several months to complete. During this time, you will likely be exposed to outdoor temperatures. Summer is the best time for this since contractors will have longer daylight hours to work with, likely getting the job done quicker.
These are only a few of countless possibilities for renovation projects. It is important to adequately prepare for any serious task that you choose to take on, so be sure to do some additional research before beginning. If you are still looking for other projects, additional ideas include caulking windows, trimming trees, repairing fences or cleaning out gutters. Whatever your aspirations may be, make sure you start early so you can have some time to enjoy before autumn comes along!
